Fake IDs are infused into the American students’ experience and youth experience in general, the 2020 report that 14,000 fake IDs were seized in the city of Cincinnati was a big wake-up call to the nation.

Approximately 12.5 percent of high school students and 32.2 percent of college students disclosed that they possessed a fake ID. A cross-sectional study revealed that 7.5 percent of youths aged between 18 to 20 years old admitted to having used a fake ID within the last thirty days.

The Mclovin Rite of Passage

The legal age of drinking in the United States is 21, and most high school students, university or college students are teenagers. However, most of these underage students also want to enjoy alcoholic drinks yet, the law does not permit them to purchase liquors so they have to obtain alcoholic drinks through family members or friends however, more repeatedly the underage students use fake IDs to obtain liquor.

In 2017, one of the best high school movies ever seen was released, this movie ranks as one of the most popular comedy movies of the 2000s. This movie affirmed massive financial success, grossing over $170 million on a much lesser $17.5 million to $20 million budget, the movie was ranked number 487 on Empire’s 500 Greatest films of all time.

The movie we are talking about is Judd Apatow’s produced Superbad, this hit teen comedy is outstanding as a result of amazing scenes and classic moments in the movie, one of these moments is served by the stunning actor Christopher Mintz-Plasse who played the character called Fogell, popularly known as ‘McLovin’.

Is Mclovin the culprit?

In a study consisting of almost 1,000 college students at a university in the United States, the research found that about two-thirds of the study participants had at least used false IDs once during college.

McLovin portrays one of the most common crimes in the United States; false identification. The name McLovin has enjoyed a lot of attractions, and many people– teenagers, in particular, have a shocking connection to this McLovin character.

We have broken down this article into three sections, under these sections we are going to have an in-depth look at:

  • A brief recap of how McLovin started.
  • McLovin: Usage of fake IDs among American teenagers and college students.
  • Influence of the usage of a fake ID on the college culture in the USA.

About Superbad (Mclovin Fake ID)

McLovin is a tale of youthful exuberance, McLovin has cemented its place in cinematic history, ‘teenagehood’, culture, comedy, and even crime. Superbad was released in 2017, the teenage comic movie starred amazing authors like Emma Stone, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Bill Hader, co-writer; Seth Rogen, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. The latter played the character Fogell– also known as McLovin.

The name McLovin was made popular by the 2017 comic movie, the name was Fogell’s fake identity in the movie.
In the movie, Evan and Seth–Michael Cera and Jonah Hill’s characters are best friends and high school seniors. During home economics class Seth is paired with his love interest; Jules who invites Seth to her house party that night.

The invite to the party led to a problem, the liquor problem. Jules gave Seth money to buy alcohol for the party, Seth promised he wouldn’t disappoint and Evan also promised his love interest; Becca, that he’ll get her a special bottle of vodka for the house party. They needed the plan to get alcohol.

Fogell came up with a plan– a fake ID plan to buy liquor, since they had no other choice they depended on Fogell to buy liquor for the party they were heading to, to satisfy his friends’ needs Fogell obtained a fake ID which claimed he was born on June 3, 1981, he was an organ donor, his name was McLovin– no first name, and he’s from Hawaii.

Evan and Cera protested the believability of the information provided on the fake identity card. Evan mocked Fogell’s choice of name– McLovin. Evan claimed the name sounded like an Irish R&B singer, while Seth questioned why Fogell’s fake ID claimed he was 25 years old suggesting that Fogell could have gone for 21 years rather than 25.

In his defense, Fogell maintained that the decision was all a strategy. The strategy– a fake ID worked out well and Fogell or McLovin successfully bought the liquor however, Fogell was knocked out by a robber.

Before he was knocked down by the robber, the scene where Fogell was replying to the sales rep awkwardly was humorous and relatable because a lot of us can relate to those moments we tried to act as an adult and do what adults do.

When the sales rep requested Fogell’s identification card and when McLovin’s fake ID was closely inspected we all felt a little bit of fear that Fogell’s ID would be rejected and probably get reported to the police. That fear is a reminder of how harmful and illegal it is to use fake ID states it is also an indication that it’s better to stay away from fake IDs, don’t use them, and save yourself from avoidable trouble.

Binge Drinking & College Freshmen Culture

The National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 contributed to the rise of fake IDs, this 1984 Act forced states to enforce the new age restriction with a threat to lose 10 percent of their highway funding if they don’t enforce the drinking age restriction. This restriction led to a strict position on fake IDs and more arrests. The statistics above are concerning and the fact that many youths perceive the use of fake IDs as a regular and safe means to purchase or obtain alcohol is discomforting.

The use of fake ID is largely due to underage drinking, Superbad and McLovin portrayed this relation perfectly. Underage drinking is unethical and illegal yet American teenagers don’t care, they don’t want to wait for two or three years when they would be 21 years old and free to spend time in a thrilling bar scene in Massachusetts or an all-night party with free liquor.

Teenagers who are either contemplating purchasing fake IDs or those in possession of one already need to understand the probable consequences. They need to also understand that they can enjoy a lovely social life without underage drinking.

The administrators of colleges, high schools, universities, and the government are cracking down on offenders, we know you wouldn’t want to land behind bars so, it’s time to rescind your fake ID. If you don’t rescind it could hurt your future so, it’s time to stop selling, buying, or using a false ID.

Now that you are aware, be smart, and responsible.
